Earthquakes can be very devastating to the world around us. Go to the link I posted in my blog and chose a Earthquake and tell me these 5 things

Example: I chose the 1687 Peru Earthquake. This earthquake occurred on October 20, 1687 off the coast of Peru. The magnitude couldn't be exactly measured, but there is an estimated magnitude of 8.4-8.7. This earthquake triggered a tsunami. Both the earthquake and the tsunami combined for a total of 5,000 casualties.
On May 3, 1887, the Sorona earthquake occurred in Mexico. Its magnitude was a 7.6 and caused 43 casualties in the town of Bavispe and 51 overall. Towns near the epicenter suffered significant damage, particularly in Bavispe, where most houses were destroyed and 42 of the town's 700 inhabitants were killed.
ReplyDeleteOn August 28, 19 a earthquake hit Veracruz, Mexico at 4:06am. The 'quake had a high magnitude of 8.5. The total number of deaths ranged from 600-1200. The name of the event was called the Veracruz Earthquake.
ReplyDeleteOn February 3, 1923 an earthquake hit Kamchatka, Russia called the 1923 Kamchatka earthquake. This certain earthquake had a magnitude of 8.5. 300 people died from this earthquake and about 530 went missing.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that we've all heard about the recent earthquake that hit the east coast of Japan. This earthquake was officially given the name, the Great East Japan Earthquake. It hit on March 11, 2011. The quake had a magnitude of 9.0 and caused tons of damage. Along with the earthquake, they also experienced a tsunami that was triggered by the Great East Japan Quake. I'm sure that we will remember this for a long time because it killed many of people, ruined a great part of Japan, and hit the nuclear power plants and caused explosions.
ReplyDeleteOn May 22, 1960 an earthquake hit Valdivia, Chile with a magnitude of 9.5. An estimate of 5,700 people died and an estimate of 400 million to 800 million US dollors of damage. This earthquake is reffered to 1960 Valdivia earthquake.
ReplyDeleteOn August 17, 1959 the Yellowstone earthquake hit southwestern Montana. It occured at 11:37 pm. The magnitude was 7.3- 7.5. The quake caused a huge landslide that caused over 28 fatalities and left $11 million in damage.
ReplyDeleteOn 18 February 1756, one of the strongest earthquakes in Central Europe. It struct Düren Germany, and is their strongest reported Earthquake to date. The quake was appointed a VIII on the Mercalli intensity scale, which today is about a 6.4 on the Richter scale. The Düren Earthquake caused four deaths, two in Düren and two in Cologne. It also caused springs to run dry, and others to increase in size.
ReplyDeleteThe 1985 Nahanni earthquakes is the name for a continuous sequence of earthquakes that began in 1985 in the Nahanni region of the Northwest rerritories, Canada. The largest of these earthquakes occured on Demember 23, 1985, reaching 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale. This is one of the most significant earthquakes in Canada during the 20th century.
